You can't be sure. This is what Rene Descartes was getting at when he said 'I think therefore I am'. Basically, I can't be sure my senses are telling the truth. But I know I am doubting them. Therefore the only thing I know for certain is that I am thinking and if I am thinking then something must be doing the thinking. Hence I exist.
However, most people then logically trust their senses (why not) and accept than the infinitely small possibility that only they exist as being so close to zero that it is zero. Thus they are out there.
