Where are you riding? There is no divide where I ride. My husband and I have Harleys and our sons have Hondas, Yamahas, and our daughter has a honda. Sorry to hear about that. We live in Buffalo, NY and Tarpon Springs, Fl. No divide here. You must be running into ignorant people. Find new people. There are organizations who represent Motorcycle Enthusiast such as you. ABATE is one of them. Find them on the web. I am sure there is one in your area. They are everywhere.

I'm not going to say I'm a H-D fan. I've ridden my friend's '06 1200 sporty (with the standard-issue cuttoff pipes and an air cleaner and jet kit) and was thoroughly unimpressed. All it seemed to do to me was make noise.
Sorry, but a 40-year-old engine design (a bad one at that, with uneven cooling to the cylinders) pumping out a whopping 60 HP doesnt do as much for me as a 120hp 750cc inline four, with fuel injection and variable timing.

Personal preferences aside, I still wave to other riders when I'm on the road, regardless of what kind of bike they are on. The people who dont wave back most frequently? Yup, H-D riders.

Chicago Bob's "100 years of riding H-Ds with no trouble" is parroted frequently both online and "in real life".
How about the Altamont Free Concert?
How about the Hells Angels? Now theres a straight-laced bunch of H-D riders if there ever was one.
Now I'm not saying all H-D riders are lumped in with them. And I know for a fact that not all sportbike riders contribute to "the problem".

There is a divide, people who ride crotch rockets are causing more traffic accidents, and the fatality rate keeps climbing. This is going to cause states to have helmet laws again. Sport Biker riders weave in and out of traffic, and disobey most traffic laws.

Harley Riders on the other hand, hate helmet laws. Harley Rider's are cruiser, we do not try to go down the road at 120 Mph, we normally do the speed limit. Keep in mind that our Harley's will do 120 Mph, we choose not to. Yes we have loud pipes but we do what we can to make sure the Cages see and hear us.

Agree or not, it is the crotch rocket riders who are screwing things up for Motorcycles So it's not really Harley vs Everyone else it more like Cruiser's vs Sport Bikes. We have been riding Harley's for more than 100 years with no problems. The problems came when crotch rockets became popular. Now you got the idiots popping wheelies, and trying to break the land speed record on the highway and city streets.

Get rid of the Sport bikes, get rid of the problem.

I don't know, but I've experienced the exact same thing over the past 15 years. It's NOT just 'funnin' either (I've seen HD riders actually put someone's jap bike on a bonfire before, just as I've seen a gaggle of sportbike riders completely demolish a HD before ~ you Don't step infront of those kinds of hords to try and stop anything, at least not if you value your health/life).

And this drift exists everywhere. From my small home town in Wyoming, to big cities like DC, Phoenix and Atlanta (I've witnessed it personally in every place).

But it all comes down to a person (ahem, the loud pipes guy above is a Perfect example) who has the idea of "Screw you and yours, I'm more important and I don't care what you think" that's ruining it for everyone. This goes for ALL riders, from the cruiser folks who insist on loud pipes and riding drunk, to the sportbike folks who also insit on loud pipes and doing stunts on public roadways, to the offroad folks who don't respect the land and manage to get public lands closed to motorized vehicles due to riding off-trail, or when the ground is wet and easily rutted.

It just seems that the cruiser people have the most vocal voice... maybe because they think that's part of the 'identiy' (no clue, my HD had stock pipes, as did my VFR and Bandit)... but more likely it's just because there are Many more of those riders out there.

But it's a sad thought, knowing that if things continue going as they have been, that any kids I have may not get the joy of riding a motorcycle. I firmly believe that annoying the general public will lose all motorcyclist's some rights. It's already happened in the off-road world where more and more land restricts off-road riding after a few did serious damage (or annoyed hikers with noise). It's happening for street riders in small ways too, where Home Owners Assoc. are banning motorcycles, apartment complexes too. I even know of a restraunt that will call the police if a motorcycle pulls into their parking lot. This is just going to get worse unless the REAL riders out there who Care about keeping the PRIVLIDGE (yes, it's a privlidge, not a right) to ride start shutting out those who do whatever they can to cause all of us to lose our privlidges.

Me, I do my part by refusing to service bikes with loud pipes or of people I know to generally annoy the voting public. This is told to the owners face, along with an assurance that I've already discussed this feeling with every other MC mechanic within a 100 mile radius (it's generally a fairly mutual feeling, the only people who still work on those bikes are sub-par mechanics, at least around here). This came after I was pulled over for a 'noise check' (on a bike with stock pipes), shortly after a noise ordanace was passed due to many complaints of loud motorcycles.

In the end, I wish we all Could get along, but knowing that'll never happen, I hope that the Good motorcyclists out there (who are into it because of the joy that motorcycling brings) are able to effectivly run off those who're just into it as an 'image' thing.

You have a good point. But reality as it is, you know and therefor must be aware of this fact and thus drive accordingly. I mean, you know that a person in a parked car along the road is a potential door opener, why drive as it it weren't so?

Because anything that has style, performance, and a low price. Is not the American way...
If you can't over spend on something that's over priced, under powered and not very stylish with a big name (sorry HD)...

You're very right though, we should all be out there making the cages understand that it's our road also...
