How will my irregular periods affect my ability to get pregnant?
Irregular Periods
Menstrual cycles that vary more than a few days in length from month to month are considered irregular cycles or periods. Most menstrual cycle intervals occur about every four weeks, with the normal range between 24 and 35 days. To measure your menstrual cycle, start counting from the first day of your last period and stop counting on the first day of your next period. Don't worry if you have one or two irregular cycles because occasionally all women have variations in their periods. True irregularity persists over several months. So if you do notice wide fluctuations in your cycle, speak to your doctor about it.
Irregular periods and getting pregnant
Irregular periods can be troublesome when trying to get pregnant. Irregular or abnormal ovulation and menstruation accounts for 30% to 40% of all cases of infertility. Irregularity, per se, is not necessarily a problem if you learn how to chart your fertility signs, especially cervical fluid, to determine when you are approaching your short window of fertility. But, if cycles are very long, it means by definition, that ovulation is not occurring as often as it would with a typical monthly cycle, a condition known clinically as anovulation.
There are numerous factors that determine how fertile a woman is, such as her age, whether and how often she ovulates, whether her cervical fluid is wet enough to sustain sperm, whether her fallopian tubes are open, etc. But the most important of all is the release of the egg itself. If you don't release an egg, meaning you don't ovulate, you don't have as many opportunities to get pregnant.
Treatment for irregular periods
Women with irregular periods are often prescribed fertility drugs like Clomid to increase the number of ovulation periods. But if you would rather try a more natural approach, you might want to see a naturopathic doctor first to see if they can prescribe a less harsh treatment.
Although anovulation can usually be treated with fertility drugs, it is important to rule out other conditions that could interfere with ovulation, such as liver disease, diabetes, problems with the ovaries, and abnormalities of the adrenal, pituitary, or thyroid glands, which produce important hormones.

Hi, I am sure you are probably quite frustrated and saddened by your struggle to get pregnant. Don't lose hope.
I had irregular periods for almost 9 years. Some may have been due to my athletic training and some may simply have been stress. I went to many Doctors during that time and truly none of them could give me a real answer or cause about it. What they did say is that I could not get pregnant. So, I believed them.
Well, about 4 years years ago my periods started to occur more frequently, to the point that they were regular. I'd stopped training as hard and I'd stopped traveling so much as I used to travel frequently. All of a sudden, my cycle just became pretty normal.
After 2 years of normal cycles, low and behold, I became pregnant! It was a complete shock to me, plus I am considered an "older mom". I could not believe it when the pregnancy test showed positive. Anyway, I was high-risk thru my entire pregnancy and at one point almost lost him. I was then put on bedreat at about 7 months.
My son is now 19 mos, beautiful, happy and a gorgeous kid. He is indeed a true miracle that I NEVER expected. In fact. i used to look at other moms and just feel so sad and left out-as though I were always "on the outside looking in". Now all that has changed.
Don't lose hope. I did not have any medication, just a change of lifestyle, happier surroundings, less stress, and a better outlook. All of that worked together naturally to create my son.
Good luck to you. Stay positive!

My periods come between 26-30 day cycles - each cycle is unpredictable. At times they have skipped completely without being pregnant. I tried charting my basal body temperature, but my temperature was all over the place and not helpful at all. OPK's can get expensive after awhile.
I did several calculations using an ovulation calendar to determine the soonest and latest times I'd be fertile, had sex once every day that I could have possibly been fertile (which had been a week straight), and managed to conceive. It took three months without any medication.
Example: My LMP was 11/18/2006. I started having sex 11/27/06 (the beginning fertile period of the 26-day-cycle) every day through 12/04/06 (the end of the fertile period of the 30-day-cycle).

When you have irregular periods you will have a much harder time TTC. I have the same problem so my doctor put me on clomid. 8 days after sex is to early to get a positive. So if your period doesn't come in a week test again. Stress can affect when you ovulate or if you do at all. So you need to relax a bit so your body can do what it needs to do. If you can't go to a doctor and get a prescription. Try licorice root. You take it for 5 days just like clomid days 5-9 of your cycle. It has the same affect as clomid they say. So when you get your period that is day one it doesn't matter how long your cycle was before you always start at one when you get your period. Chart your cycle and if you can use ovulation tests to see if you are ovulating. That is important to know. Try to keep sex close to ovulation. To much sex causes a low sperm count and can make it harder to get pregnant. So you want to center sex around ovulation if you can. Best of luck to you!!
