I've been interested in getting a pedal for my guitar, but i don't know really anything about them. I would like to know the basics, like are there X number of sounds and each company gives them their own name for it, what's some good companies, stuff like that. If possible a url link to a good site would be great. I'm just pretty thick about this and i don't know anything about it, and i don't won't to go out and buy one that i don't like later on. Also, is there a way to hear how they sound before you purchase them? I like rock, alt, some metal, things like that, are there any good pedals like that? sorry for all the questions, any informative answers would be greatly appreciated.

I have an all-purpose digital effect pedal by Korg...the AX10G. It's a couple hundred dollars, but you'll get damn near every possible guitar effect imaginable out of it.

The Yamaha MagicStomp II is very reasonably priced, has loads of effects, and has very good digital sound quality. I picked one up at musiciansfriend.com from $79.99 and have seen them on eBay around the same price. Not bad for a guitar effects unit that has an original price tag of $300 and has sound quality that rivals the best pedals out there.

Plus.. the effects options are limitless... Not only is EVERY effect is customizable.. but this thing even has USB capability that allows you to download other people's custom effects from a designated FREE website. Pretty awesome stuff.

Your best bet to hear them would to be go to your local guitar shop and ask for demos. I personally use the Digitech GNX2, it has thousands of sound possibilities. I would go with Digitech or BOSS for pedals. They seem to be the best.

When it comes to guitars, I always pick Fender. I don't know if there are different styles, but if there are, go for the one that's cheaper.
