I second the Natures Miracle suggestion. This stuff works like a charm. I've cleaned vomit out of my car (all over my car) and cat pee out of my carpet with it. It works by using enzymes to actually break down the odor causing elements, rather than perfumes to mask the odor or detergents to try and wash the odor away.

Read the labels and get something that contains a bacteria enzyme. The enzyme will literaly eat the stinky stuff. After cleaning let it dry naturaly so it can keep working.Using products without an enzyme will only spread the odor and make it worse. If the product dosen't contain an enzyme it will only cover the odor and not remove the stink. Always clean from the outside of your area and in towards the center so you don't spread it out making it bigger.

After cleaning with upholstery or carpet cleaner, spray fabric refresher all over affected area.
You may have to do it a few times, over a period of a few days until the smell goes, but it works.

If you don't want to rent a carpet shampooer and shampoo it, you could try sprinkling some dry Comet on it like a carpet freshener, and then vacuum it up. Be careful though, inhaling it is unpleasant and it it possible it might change the color!
I think shampooing is best, though.

You can rent a carpet cleaner if you do not have one. I use Resolve on spots but this sounds like it needs big time attention.
