Try swimming at Aquatic Park at the foot of Hyde Street. The temps in the Bay right now are in the high 50s. It's invigorating! I swim in the Bay almost daily, and it's so much less boring than being in a pool. You don't need a wetsuit (I never use one, but I'm acclimated to Bay swimming), but you can use one if it's your first time and you don't know how you'll handle the temperature. Wear a Neoprene swim cap at the minimum (that's wetsuit material) to protect your head from escaping heat.

There's an Alcatraz Swim tomorrow, New Year's Day, but I believe you have to be a registered member of the swim club to do it.

Try Bay swimming! It's a great way to get your "laps" in!

Look for the ones with the really murky green water.

i doubt it chlorine kills bacteria and also keeps the pools from getting algae.

I don't know of any specifics, but you can always try lakes, ponds or other bodies of water.
