Stocks are an ownership "share" of an individual company. The company sells stock to raise capital for a variety of corporate uses including expansion, & research.
Some companies don't have stock. They are referred to as privately held companies.
The value of a stock rises or falls as the business climate for that firm varies. ( among several other reasons, including interest rates, government regulation, & public perception of the firm)
