i taught high school for a short time before getting an MBA and embarking on a business career. it was fun and all that, but long term I felt like i could do the best job in the world, be the best teacher ever, and in the end my family's financial future was no more secure than the slacker teacher next door who still has the same worksheets and exams from 30 years ago and is bitter as hell. Also, I had to play baby sitter with 1/2 my time and worried about keeping them busy EVERY SINGLE MINUTE or the ADD would kick in and the class would become unruly. My advice if you teach. Move to a growing area with newer schools and lower cost real estate. Buy all the real estate you can with every dime you make from teaching. you will secure your future through investments and not through pension income. Do not start off in a old school district with problem schools (LA for example). Work in a small district, not a big one. Coach a sport. I still coach hs football for fun. volunteering with hs students keeps me young. Now if I go back into education, I want to own the school and make the decisions. good luck

I am a recently retired elem teacher. I love teaching but I HATE policing kids who haven't been disciplined and who need to learn manners and respect. So the good of teaching is it is great fun to teach and if you can find a place to teach, perhaps in homeschool or private school where you have some control over whom you teach, the actual art of teaching touches the soul. Public school teaching is decent pay and usually has great bennies (retirement, if you make it that far :) Be very sure to spend as much time as you can in the public classrooms before you become a teacher or even start on that course. See what it is really like and find an open honest teacher who will tell you the ups and downs of teaching. It is rated the 2nd most stressful job in the US behind traffic controllers. How do you handle stress ?

Are you arguing with someone about becoming a teacher and if so, why would you have too?
My argument would be....
It's not about making lots of money it's about shaping young minds, and giving kids / teenagers, the drive and motivation to want to suceed in life.

You know, if you really would like to become a teacher, do that. It is a nice profession. You have the chance to do a lot of good.

I can't stop myself from telling other people what's what about what! I'm simply DRIVEN to share. I love to share my knowledge, and facilitate the success of others. I'm rewarded by the light of recognition in someone's eyes when they finally understand a point I'm clarifying.
(this is true for me)

To WANT to teach and be a good role model for your students. If you had to ask, think of another career.
