President Ford planned his own funeral, as all Presidents do. Since he was never an elected President, he felt it would be wrong to have the pomp and circumstance. Also, his family evidently preferred to do what the late President wished.

Because the Ford family requested a private funeral, their option being a State funeral, with the parade, honor guard hearse etc.

Something most Republicans would never understand since their philosophy is completely self-centered. If they could have they would have had the pyramids of Giza replicated full-size on the national mall and they would have put their God, Reagan's moldy corpse inside and made a federal law that every American make a pilgramage their to worship his bones.
