Im talking about someone currently living. I was thinking the pope or the dalai lama, but probably more likely the dalai lama because there are more people in India/Asia then the Americas and Europe. I was also thinking maybe David Beckham or some other big soccer star becuase nearly every country watches soccer. President Bush or some other political leader or dictator might be a contender also. What do you think? Anyone have any other ideas?

It just might be

"Recently recognized by Sports Illustrated as still the best-known athlete in the world, Muhammad Ali has played a fascinating role in American culture, with an influence that has reached far beyond sports."

He's said to be recognized by about 98% of the world's population.

"I'm sure he's not known by 98%, like Muhammad Ali supposedly is . . ."

"His is perhaps the most famous face in the world, and he is undeniably ''The Greatest'' in the world of boxing."

"Meredith Vieira, co-host of NBC’s “Today” and host of the syndicated “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” cited the former world heavyweight champion’s signature phrase: “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee;” she then presented “the most recognized person in the world” with the “first ever” Double Helix medal for Humanitarianism."

"A primary project of the former heavyweight champion is the construction of the $41 million Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. The center is being established not only to preserve the legacy of the man who became "the most recognized human being on Earth" but also the ideals of respect, hope and understanding among the peoples of the world."

The most famous well known but not fully understood is "George Bush".

We have to remember that W. Churchill was at first also satanized and tilted as a "Warmonger" for seeking war against Hitler.

With time those people eventually knew better and realized how wrong they had been.
