If revving helps it could be a word water pump or clogged radiator. If that's the original radiator it's way past the end of it's normal lifespan, and too clogged for a flush to help. If you replace the radiator it will be easy to put a new water pump in while you have everything apart.

i mechanic for a living,and i use to have one of these ,it always ran a little on the warn side too,,one day while business was slow i took the water pump off if it to look at it real good,,and it had wore the fins out that help push the coolant through the engine,,they were about gone on it,,i replaced the water pump,and flushed it out real good,and never did have any more problems from it,other than the fact that it really didn't have the power i needed,but it never run hot again,,you might want to check this,its possible yours may have the same problem also,good luck with it,,,i hope this help,s.happy new years also.

I would suspect the thermostat, too, and would ck it to see if it is opening up... On a truck that old, I would also ck the radiator to see if it is clogged up with deposits... and replace the hoses, they may be collapsing and causing the system to overheat...

make sure your radiator is clean it can get packed with mud ,bugs and junk or your water pump has worn and needs replaced it may not pump efficiently at idle.

radiator is almost 20 years old. . could also be waterpump.. the impeller wears out.... use 50/50 coolant

If you use ethanol mixed gas it will make your vehicle run at a higher temp.

replace thermostat,clean front of radiator, if that doesn't help i would flush the stystem. also check your fan out.
