Dude the ants are so annoying. If anybody knows any home made stuff that would be good. But the name of store bought stuff would help too.

The nonpoisonous way to protect your tree is to wrap the trunk with a "trunk wrap" paper tape. Then spread some Tanglefoot on it--it is the stickest substance almost on the planet. That will stop them unless they have other access beside going up the trunk. (The tree wrap isn't really necessary but I recommend it so eventually you can take the wrap off and the Tanglefoot will go with it. If you put the Tanglefoot right on the trunk as the directions say you will never get it off and then you can get the sticky stuff on you. I just like the idea of eventually being able to get rid of it.

A good poison if you want to dust or spray the trunk is Sevin or permethrin. Both come in liquid spray or dust and are very effective.

Neither method above will harm the tree. Petroleum products like kerosene can harm the tree.

Here is the guaranteed cure for ants. Get a pound of black powder, or pyrodex, and pour some out around each ant hill and walk away...

Come back in a couple of days, it will be gone, pour some more out, and walk away...

Repeat this several times. When "I did it I" went through almost the whole pound.

Now, get some smokeless powder, pour it into the ant hill and then make a line all the way back to someplace safe to stand.

Apply fire.

The yard will lift and settle, you will see dirt fly up out of about a dozen little anthills you did not know were there, and that is the end of the ants.

Period.

You see, ant physiology is such that whatever is small enough for them to carry, they will take into their colony.

That, combined with the extremely fast burn rate of black powder, does the trick, the smokeless stuff is just a fuse.

My method is to wrap a think piece of cloth, or rope, around the tree trunk, down low, then soak it in diesel fuel. This will keep them off the tree. You will have to re-soak the cloth or material ever couple of weeks or so. Do not soak the ground around the tree....just the cloth or rope.

To the the ants out of the tree, to start with, just use a good insect spray and spray them. You may have to get a pump up sprayer in order to get the poison up into the tree, depending how tall the tree is. Good luck. Pops
