Police can get DNA from anything that is once a part of you, all they need is a cell from your body. People shed excessively, hair and skin particle all the time so they can easily pick some DNA off you.

Because a lot of DNA is junk DNA which is currently believe to serve no purpose except as an evolutionary byproduct, junk DNA can still allow us to link individuals with individuals via highly repeatitve sequences which may be cut differently and show special patterns from individual to individual. This concept is similar to fingerprints, which have no special purpose but can allow us to distinguish different people

Unless you are arrested you are under no obligation to give your fingerprints or a DNA swab. However the police may want your fingerprints to eliminate you from the investigation, they cannot then hold those prints on record - they have to destroy them. Problem is though, if you are even remotely suspected of wrong doing you can be arrested and have fingerprints and DNA sample taken, then even if released without charge the police will keep the prints and DNA sample which can then be used to check against crimes from the past ad any in the future. Good Luck

There isn't a such thing as "DNA Fingerprints." They use a special powder to get fingerprints (which are made from impressions of the oils that come from your hands). And they get DNA from skin, hair, semen, and saliva samples that can be found around wherever somebody has been.

They can extract DNA from skin flakes, hair and that sort of stuff. Then it is analysed in a chromatograph which gives what they call a "fingerprint".
