Get a usb wireless, it is easier. All you have to do is plug it in to the usb port. Other wise to install a wirless card you will have to shut down the pc, open it and see if you have an open PCI slot. T Plug the card into it and install the drivers that came with it on the cd.

depending on the compaq model you have,if its a comapq deskpro then a usb wireless device would be a better idea, but if you have adequate pci-slots then a network card would be more ideal
a network card is pretty straightforward to install, its just a case of open the case, gently but firmly insert the network card into the pci slot and tighten the retaining screw and close the case
turn on the p.c and windows xp will say"found new hardware",if the card came with a driver cd insert it now and then continue with the installation, windows will finally notify you"your hardware is installed and ready for use"
from experience i have allways found network cards much better than usb wireless devices, also they dont get knocked out by accident
go for belkin wireless accesories if you can, there the best in networking stuff
happy new year!
