I am a native Texan so I can explain with authority. The saying actually began before Texas Independence but was primarily word-of-mouth. It had to do with Texas' 4 separate climates, geophysical areas, disparate crops, etc. When in the 20s, oil and gas sprang onto the economic scene, picture postcards were becoming popular and the postcard people had a heyday. Those postcards are quite valuable now.

But I can truthfully say that the only thing about Texas that is bigger is the land mass and many of the mouths.

What's bigger in Texas?..
The cities-overcrowded, smog filled, concrete jungles in the middle of the prairies; great pretenders/superficial/two faced people; great distances; very hot weather;illegal immigrants.
The economy, the cost of living/housing are the only good things.Unfortunately, there is a reason why it's so cheap to live here...you get what you pay for! Yes, if you are from Texas everything is bigger and better... From birth they are brainwashed to believe this!People from Texas Love Texas and are shocked if you say anything negative about the state. Most of them have been here all of their lives and would never consider going anywhere else. Texas is the end all, be all to them .

Ummmm, no. Its a myth of Americana, just like calling Chicago the Windy City (both Boston and New York are windier).

Texas itself, of course, is bigger than any state but Alaska.
