Wow, they don't legally have to be in school until they are 7?
Ours begin reception at 4. They are taking their first set of tests at 7, and going on to Junior School. I think our system pushes them into such things much too young - your system sounds better.

The age a child attends kindergarten in the US can range from 4-6. It is dependant upon the child's birthday. Each state has a deadline to start for the year. If the birthday is before that deadline, they can start the current year(some kids may be 4, turning 5 or already 5) Otherwise, they will have to wait until the next year. (5 turning 6, or already 6)

Not sure about any national curriculum. Each state has their own guidelines for what must be learned. We live in Alabama now and My daughter learned her letters, colors, shapes and numbers in Preschool(before kindergarten), but is mainly doing review on that and also learning addition and subtraction, telling time, counting money, reading and spelling, furthering social skills now that she is in Kindergarten. We live in an area where both the Preschool and kindergarten are all day classes.
However, we have lived in other states where my other children had kindergarten and they weren't learning nearly as much. So, it just depends on the state, school and teachers.

Hope that helps.

every school ia a little different, but typically a child needs to be 5 to enter kindergarten and that can also depend on when their birthday is. You can call the elementary school near where you want your child to go. A child does not have to be in school legally until they are 7. There are other options available. Church schools, private schools and home schooling(this is regulated through the public school system). You have a lot of choices

Kindergarten is optional in most places, and is for children who are five by a certain date--typically August 30, but as late as October 1 in other places.

Children learn their letters, colors, shapes, numbers, and social skills like listening, sharing, talking in front of the class. In most areas, kindergarten is only a half-day program.
