There are several ways to connect your computer to the Internet. The most common way is through your phone line, and there are many dial up service providers you can use. The down fall to this method is it is slow and ties up your phone. There are several DSL company's witch still use your phone line but don't tie up the phone, cost a little more and are much faster. There are also other options like cable company and satellite company connections. It's all a matter of what you want, and what you are willing to spend. I use high speed from my phone company.

Thru your phone line, or dsl line.
It goes thru a machine in, or beside the computer, called a modem.
The modem allows everything to go into, and outof, your computer and then in/out your phone line.
The internet is a bunch of programs.
The people who work in the phone company have big machines that these programs are in that allow us to talk to the internet and others.
The cool thing is you can look up web pages all away around the world, in less than a few seconds. Even Superman cannot go that fast.

It depends on the type of service yo have. If you are using dial up, you need to connect a phone line from the jack in the wall to the line jack on the back of your computer which comes from your modem. Then you will have to install their software to get the dial up numbers &etc. If you are using a DSL or cable ISP, then you will need a modem and you will have to get hold of whichever service you are using and they will walk you through getting it set up and working as each has different ways and they have to activate your account.
