You can buy a whole anime series for only $40?! Where?! LOL
Never knew you could buy anime so cheap.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a good anime series, only 51 episodes and 1 movie to collect, but it's not $40, it's quite a bit more.

If you have a Suncoast nearby, they have Buy 1 Get 1 Free on Geneon Anime, I got the entire Lain series for $40. You can get Please Teacher! for $30 at Best Buy, Gunslinger Girl for $40 at Best Buy... I also saw SaiKano for $40(reduced from $70) at Best Buy.

Your best bet is to go with 12/13/14-episode anime series. They cost on average $20-50, a 24/25/26-episode costs about $60-80. If more than 26, expect to pay more than $100.

Anime series aren't expensive. You have to look around - online stores and retail stores.

I spend on avg. about $16 a DVD. That's not bad, that's $4 to 13 less than MSRP. Which is ideal.

Bandai has recently re-released some of their series as part of their Anime Legends collection. Most of these box sets were originally over $100,but the price range is between $35-$50 on these, and they have a decent selection depending upon what your tastes are. I was able to find them at Amazon (just do a search for anime legends), but I'm sure they can be found at most major retailers too.

In my opinion,I will suggest FIRST GUNDAM.
FIRST GUNDAM was broadcasted 1974 in Japan.
This animation was made by Mr Tomino.
FIRST GUNDAM is not only robot battle animation but also humanity animation.
By the way,I have watched it more than 100 times since my childhood.

In addition to this,I suggest LAPUTA: Castle in the Sky.
This animation was made by Hayao Miyazaki.
I have watched it more than 50 times since my childhood.

Both animations are one of the most popular animations in Japan.

Besides these,I recommend Casle of KARIOSUTORO of Lupin Ⅲ(ルパン三世 カリオストロの城(in Japanese))But I think this animation isn't translated Japanese into English.

You can't talk about animations without watching them!!
This is Japanese opinion.

You could buy the dvd box set of "The Magical Shopping Arcade of Abenobashi" for only $30 dollars. It has only 12 episodes but it's worth it. Especially if you're a fan of Fooly Cooly and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
