Jennifer was acting all through her eyes and other nonverbal behavior. When she was singing "And I Am Telling You," you could see the pain and anguish in her eyes. You saw tears welling up, but she was refusing to let them go out of defiance. When she was telling Eddie that she didn't do backup, you could see the disgust on her face and how she cut her eyes. For a new actress, never been trained, she just has a natural ability to act through her nonverbal behavior. She needed that in a movie that's a musical.
Herein lines the problem for Beyonce. Beyonce is beautiful. Hands down. But, I'm going to have to agree with the New York Times review about her -- she has a vapid quality about her. To me, if I just focused on her eyes, there was nothing there. No emotions. There were no real nuances or layers being revealed. When she's on stage in her Sasha alter-ego, she shows life, passion, and energy. When she's not Sasha, she's sort of boring and plastic. To me, she brought the boring to Dreamgirls. If she was trying to channel Diana Ross, then she should have brought more umph to the screen because Diana is and always was a personality. She focused so much on losing weight and holding back on not being Sasha for the screen. Definitely Sasha wouldn't have worked here. But, if she needs to create another personality to just show a personality, then she should have created one for Dreamgirls so she could have showed life. The only time she showed something was twice -- when she was singing fussing at Jennifer when they kicked Effie out the group and when she sang the Listen song.
Jennifer showed emotions during the speaking, nonspeaking, and singing parts. Beyonce only showed emotions (to me) during the two sassy singing parts.
Personally, if she wants to be considered a "real" actress, then she needs to do things other than musicals and really work on acting through her nonverbal behavior. I remember Elijah Wood in The Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Rings. He conveyed so much information and emotions through just his eyes. It was striking. Jennifer did something similar in Dreamgirls -- but not Beyonce to me.
I think Beyonce will win an Oscar for Listen (not much out there to compete with this song I don't think), but definitely not Best Actress. There are some powerhouse actresses in the Best Actress running and I don't Beyonce should even be in their leagues. Jennifer will most likely win her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. An Oscar is an Oscar to me and I would be less sure about her winning if she were in the Best Actress category because of the more established actresses in the running.
Another surprise performance for me was Eddie Murphy. He was going through his divorce at the time of this filming and I was amazed at how he threw himself into his character. Although, I liked the Broadway James Thunder Early better.

would desire to trust all of you. Jennifer became the authentic famous individual. If we wanted any evidence that the award shows are very almost funds then we've each and all of the evidence we want. Their isn't any reason what so ever why Beyonce would desire to be getting ultimate actress over Jennifer H's ultimate helping. i think of Effie even had extra reveal time to not point out a extra helpful overall performance. i comprehend exterior of the yank Idol worldwide Jennifer Hudson became an unknown, yet not anymore and her famous individual will upward push even farther for the double injustice she has confronted. First she lost American Idol and then she became demoted to helping over somebody who did a good interest yet would not deserve a similar compliment as a results of fact the guy who extremely made this action picture.

Jennifer of course, She got the same response as Jennifer Holiday in the play , in both cases it was worth it just to hear the Jennifers sing! Although I liked the play better, the movie wasn't that bad. To be honest, I am glad to see someone other than Beyonce in the limelight.

Jennifer Hudson definately got the most applause in my theatre. Although, I think Beyonce was downplayed on purposed because of Jamie Foxx's line that he chose her as the lead singer because her voice "had no personality" . So, she was playing that "part". But, when she sings her last song, she's all there. But I agree, Jennifer was awesome. She should really win the Best Supporting Actress.

Jennifer Hudson was awesome in Dreamgirls, expecially when you consider that it is her first movie. Beyonce was just okay. Eddie Murphy was the best actor in the movie. I didn't think the movie was all that good though.

So many people have made this comment. I can't wait to see it for myself. Although I am inclined to agree with the comment that Jennifer is better to listen to and Beyonce better to look at.

I think Jennifer is better in the movie but as Beyonce is more famous, she will never be able to reflect that.
