When I shut the monitor off, I wait a few seconds before turning it back on. Luckily it stays on after a while.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The monitor or display of a computer is the primary user interface. Monitor problems are some of the most common computer problems since the voltages inside a monitor can be as high as 10 KV. Many of the problems can be fixed yourself by simply changing the settings. Detailed instructions available at http://fixit.in/monitor.html

I'm a techno-idiot, but I did have a similar problem with a monitor. The company replaced it but the same thing kept happening. I finally figured it out by accident: the air was too dry in the room and the static electricity would cause it to black out. We were running a dehumidifer at the time because that room tended to dampness but after I shut it off, the monitor would work. It's worse in winter because the air doesn't have as much moisture and inside the heat is turned on.

Just a thought for what it's worth.

Monitors can't get viruses. You just have an old failing monitor. The power supply is probably at the end of it's life.

Monitors have power saving features that if you haven't been actively using your computer for a set number of minutes, your screen will go into standby mode. This can all be set through Windows.
