I am a novice when it comes to upgrading computers. I have opened up my desktop and there are two memory slots. One is filled with a 256mB Kingston ValueRAM (KVR333X64C25/256, 2.5V) and the other is empty.

I would like to upgrade my RAM. Should I just buy another 256mB of the same type or is it OK to order a different brand? I would ideally like to order from Maplin as I'm about to order a hard disk from them also and it would save on postage.

And is 512mB total even enough? Should I scrap the 256mB and buy two 512mB? I don't play games on the PC - but listen to music and watch streamlng video online.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Watching streaming videos is reason enough to have a good amount of RAM, as the player not need to stop to buffer the image not near as much. I would suggest at -least- adding another stick of 256MB, if not lose the 256 completely and get two 512MB.

However, if you want to save a little bit of money, and you want to go a bit in-between, just get one stick of 512 and keep the 256 in, bringing you to a total of 768.

Kingston and Crucial are both good brands of RAM, and it is better if both sticks are from the same company. And remember, if your going to get rid of the 256, anyway, just make sure what you buy match each other.

And make sure when buying your RAM, however, that it is at a speed your motherboard can support (though most faster RAM sticks have the ability to lower down to the maximum speed of your motherboard).

Well you need to make sure the RAM is you buy is compatible with your computer. Check the stickers on the current ones you have. i.e 256MB DDR2 PC 6400 Therefore the 1GB must be DDR2 and PC 6400 EDIT: The PC XXXX (X=Number) Doesn't have to be the same, but unmatched will mean the RAM will run at the lowest speed.

The amount of RAM you need depends on what you use your PC for. The brand is very important, if you can afford it go for 512MB X 2

512 should be good. There's no real need to match brands as long as it's 333mhz, or PC2700, but it wouldn't hurt. Check out

for some prices on that type.
