ask them, before they go to sleep, if they want to watch it, and then just like calmly tap them on the arm or something and say something like, hey the ball's about to drop

Least intrusive? Don't know about that, but a few kisses and a back rub is a very nice way to wake up.

on our New Year's Ball!!! " ... In my case it would help.... LOL
