To put an end to this is NO. The question then would have been when it was going to happen. That's what the population of the United States were saying in the early to mid 1800's.Forget slavery and all of that stuff. It was coming to an end, not soon to that point but in the near future. The only reason that there was so many problems about really was about control of Congress. Remember that the United States were founded on the belief that States should have power over themselves than the Federal Government.
So really the Northern States saw a powerful Federal Government over State Government and the South vice versa. So the more slave holding States held Congress seats then more power they had in the Federal Government to limit the Federal Government over State and give them what they want.
To let the state govern the way they want to govern themselves. Really it didn't matter if Douglas won because the south really didn't like him as much as Lincoln. The only way Douglas won many southern states is because Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot. But with Lincoln winning anyway the south, mainly South Carolina being inpatient, went ahead and succeeded from the Union. Which they states were allowed to do if they felt that the Federal Government was overpowering the states, and fired upon Fort Sumter. Then Lincoln called for volunteers to attack the south. Then the United States sent troops to invade the south. The act of terrorism........so the south had to defend their land from an invading army. The United States had no right or cause to start a war with the Confederate States. They had every RIGHT to succeed. It was their land.

It was stopped after four years of conflict.
Are you asking, "Could the Civil War been avoided?"
YES:
1. If Abe had not been elected.
2. If the South had given up slavery
3. If General Lee took the offer to head the Army of the Potomac.
NO:
1. Many folks truely believed that slavery was a good thing for Africans.
2. Enlightened minds used the bible as proof of their point that slavery was good/evil.
3. To go to war you need Emotional Motivation. Without emotion you have no desire to kill or be killed. Slavery was the PRIMARY reason for the Civil War. Anyone who suggestes anything different needs to read primary source material. States Rights is a contemporary Smoke Screen used to rationalize the subjugation of one people over another. Slavery was THE issue and the only issue that forced us into that war. Remove slavery and you remove the emotional motivation for war.

We can "what it" history to death but here's what I think...
Sure, the Civil War could have been stopped, but not by using the Slave Trade.
Slaves were a secondary excuse.
1. Establish state's rights. Less control from the national government and more control to the state government.
2. Allow each state to maintain a militia to protect it from the national government and react to state emergencies.
3. Do NOT end the slave trade in a day but phase the trade out by not replacing slaves.
The Union won the war, however, the Confederacy won much of what it wanted in the way of rights. Only the Slaves and taxes were not winnable issues. Today, we have a decentralized government and a National Guard that is under the direct control and supervision of The Adjutant General of the individual state. Only in times of National emergency can the National Guard be mobilized and then, only with the consent of the Govenor.
I'm not sure this helps. The bottom line is that we had one barely three generations ago and we are successful in the world. It probably did us some good.

This is an interesting question!
I noticed you asked about the Civil War, and did not ask about any 'war of northern aggression'. Perhaps in the future we can call it: The War for the Liberation of the African Americans, since this is what it achieved. It could not have been stopped because the southern slave-owning states failed to respect the democratic process, and failed to compromise. Instead they acted by taking over Federal arsenals, forts, mints, etc. by force.
Long live Grant, Sheridan, Sherman, and Hugh Judson Kilpatrick!

The causes for the War between the States were mainly economic. South wanted free trade with England where they got very reasonable returns for their cotton and low prices on manufactured goods. The North wanted protectionism because they were in the beginning of the industrialization of the country. Northern manufactures could not compete with well established English ones. The southern states were always big on states rights as delineated by US Constitution wile the northern ones favored a stronger central government. Slavery was a side issue that historians and the PC crowd has pushed to the forefront even though it was never really that important.

The War of Northern Aggression could have stopped at any time if the union had wanted it to. All they had to do was stop fighting and let the south go its way.
However, President Lincoln wanted to preserve the union so he continued the fighting until the South was defeated.
Without going into the “What If” categories, Lincoln was right. He had to keep the country together or it would divided itself further and further until you had independent states and no central government.
The South wanted to end what it saw as Northern economic oppression, and to keep its way of life. I will not get into the slavery issue because, while an important part of the Southern way of life, it was not the only reason for the war.

The American civil war could not have been avoided because all the processes of negotiation had broken down.

The American Civil War would have stopped for the reasons:
~ The americanz shouldn't have treated the blacks as slaves(almost like animals)
~ Atleast after the blacks were proven as humans, the whites should've let them go to their home country, but they were still illtreated
~ Abraham Lincoln should've taken this in a non-violent way just like Mahatma Gandhi....
Hope these points will do!!!

Don't think so cause:
There were slaves in the south
The south needed a production base. They were just rural and they wanted some of the manufacturing of the north
The north and the south saw the world totally differently
