different cultures believe eating certain foods at midnight New Year is lucky for the coming year. Scotland has an old legend that a "first footer" brings luck. That means if a tall, dark haired man with coal in his pocket is the first to walk through your front door after midnight, you'll have good luck. Scandinavians leave rice pudding outside (usually in the barn) for the nisse (elves) to eat. then the nisse will be helpful all year. no pudding and they'll be mischievous.

Open all the windows to let in the New Year.
Get a dark haired man bring a piece of coal in through the front door and out the back. But my favorite is : Sing Auld langs sign, get kissed by as many people possible and get 'pissed'

Sweep your front steps so that the dust of enemies feet will not be there in the new year.
Clean your house or it will be dirty throughout the new year.
Pay all your bills before New Year's eve or you will be in debt all year...
To name a few.
