The story starts with a graceful and pretty nymph named Echo who falls in love Narcissus, in vain. Narcissus' beauty was so unmatched that he felt it was godlike in scope, comparable to the beauty of Dionysus and Apollo. As a result, Narcissus spurned Echo's affections until, despairing, she faded away to nothing but a faint, plaintive whisper. To teach the vain boy a lesson, the goddess Nemesis doomed Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection in Echo's pond. Entranced by his own beauty and enamoured with his own image, Narcissus lay on the bank of the river and wasted away staring down into the water.

:) Narcissus (Probably misspelled)
The way I heard it..
Echo was a wood nymph who kept it a secret that Zeus had cheated on Hera. When Hera learned of her secret keeping, she told Echo that she could only repeat the last words anyone else said. Echo was walking along in the forest when she saw Narcissus, he was very beautiful and she fell in love. When he realized he was being followed he asked the person to show them self, and all she could say was "them self" so he eventually brushed her off. Hearing of this and feeling sorry Athena did something to draw him away to a pond I believe. When Narcissus found the pond he thought it was a water nymph and kept calling out to it, but every time he would stroke the reflection it would disappear. He eventually died of wasting away due to his inability to realize it was his own reflection. A flower supposedly sprung up where he died, and it was called the Narcissus.
That is where narcissism's name comes from.

There once was this famous Greek guy named Narcissus. A pretty nymph named Echo fell in love with him in vain. Narcissus felt his beauty was not even comparable to hers, so he rejected her until she wasted away to nothing but a whisper (Echo.) To teach the vain boy a lesson, the Greek goddess Nemesis doomed the boy to fall in love with his own reflection. One day Narcissus was staring lovingly into his own reflection when he fell in the water and drowned. THE END

Narcissus did, when he saw his reflection in a river. Hence the word Narcissist - a person who loves himself.
