I don't know what sort of gift to get him, I know I want to take him to a Japanese resturant and I have two in mind, but as far as a gift is concerned I'm still a bit baffled. Can you help?

It depends on how much you want to spend for him
1- get him a ticket to japan with you
2- take him to a japanese art theatre where they doa dance
3- buy him a japanese samurai sword
4- aska japanese friend who is good in caligrapy to write his name or to write a spiritual power in japanese on a cloth that he could frame.
5- get him some japanese class

If he likes to eat, he would be touched if you made sushi for him instead of bringing him to a japanese restaurant. That is, if you know how to =P. If not, perhaps you could get him a japanese fan or a cute little keychain. Most of the time, it's the gift that counts. Oh, you could get him a book on Japanese history, culture or language. He might also like a painting from Japan which you can buy from ebay but it might come a little late. Maybe you could get him something with his name in japanese?

If you can find a nice yukata for him (if he doesn't already have one) he would probably love that. It's like a summer cotton kimono for men. He can use it as a bathrobe or something.
Maybe a Japanese classic movie, anything by Kurosawa, there's also a 3 movie set on the life of Miyamoto Musashi starring Mifune.

The book of 5 rings - Musashi

I would get him an aray of japanese forgein films and wrap them with a japanase newspaper (you can find these i'm sure at barnes and noble or even your local japanese resturant might give you one of theirs) then top the gift wrapping off with a pair of chop sticks.
