I've thought about this myself, and I think that 23 or 27 could be considered borderline between "mid" and the early and late categorization.
Perhaps you would have to figure out the months, technically. Maybe mid-twenties might start at 23 years and 8 months, for example. Or would it be 4 months? Get out the calculator and divide it into thirds.
I think this will be required, in order to settle your argument.

I'd say 24-26 is mid-twenties. My fiance' is 23 and I don't think of him as being mid-twenties though. Myself, I won't be 22 until Jan 9.

I think a good range would be 24-26. 23 is still too close to 20, and 27 is closer to 30.
