A couple of years ago, I subbed for a certain teacher about 5 times, and had a young man in class. Last year, he was a student at my school, plus he was in my room for the after-school program. Well, our school closed down at the end of last year, so he went to a different junior high, and I was moved to the high school. Two days ago, he and his mom were killed by his dad. I want to go to the funeral to pay my respects, but I really want to remember him how I saw him last (which was about a month ago at the grocery store). He was 13. What do you think?

This is one of the most difficult parts of teaching and one they don't address in college teacher prep classes. If you have a story about something the student did that was wonderful and made your day, by all means share it. I'm sure there are people who would appreciate it.
My husband attended an open casket funeral for a student and has always regretted viewing the body.
I think you should go to the funeral and try very hard to avoid viewing the body in order to preserve your memories of how you last saw the student.

Go to the funeral. It will mean a lot to those who he has left behind. I am really sorry to hear about this. I hope you and the others who were part of the boy's life remember him fondly and develop an even stronger desire to make a difference in the lives of his friends and classmates that he leaves behind. If there is an open mike or a chance to share some memories, do so if you feel comfortable. But definitely attend and show your support.

I had a really sad thing happen about two years ago. A student of mine was part of the killing of an older man. The boy is 16 and he took part but was not a main perpetrator. The charges against him were reduced to aggravated assault and the three others who actually killed the man were just recently convicted. Terrible. It really bothered me for quite some time. My heart is with you. All the best.

Go to the funeral and see it as a celebration of his life rather than mourning his loss. You might actually find it comforting to hear people talking about him about the child he was and the man he could have been. If you don't go, you might end up regretting it.

I think its ok for you to attend his funeral - as a teacher I have had to sad experience of attending three funerals of former students and one former collegue. I would remind you is what you are seeing buried is not your student but simply the shell of his body where his spirit occupied. That is how such experiences and knowledge help me through such experiences. I wish you well.

Good Luck!!!

I would go to the funeral. You can always choose to remember him at his best, but I think you'll regret not saying goodbye if you don't go to his funeral. So sad...what a horrible tragedy.
