They're bored, and have no lives.

Guess you shouldn't have picked on them in middle school.

Ah, the computer hackers! There are a couple of groups in this realm. There are the programmers who write code and try to sabotage specific targets, site which promote things that they feel are bad, evil, or detrimental to society. Some hackers are just looking to make a name for themselves by doing something that isn't so much harmful, but will gain them notoriety. By hacking into a site and posting a message, the world will see how skilled they are. They can be a nuisance, but they aren't trying to harm anyone or be destructive. think of this group as modern day graphitti artists. They just want to leave their mark somewhere.
Then there is a new generation that is not as skilled, but has some prowess. These hackers create viruses to show that they have ability with code. But rather than select a specific target, they have no real aim other than to create a code that will cause havoc. Some of these people don't have any malice towards society, they just want to create something of which the world will take notice. Some people like attention and wear wild outfits or do silly things, just to make you take notice. These folks are like the Jackass of the computer world. Some of these folks are hired by the computer firms to prevent the next generation of hackers from doing even more damage to the internet. These people can become valuable members of society once focussed and compensated for their knowledge. Since this has become the precedent, the prospect of a sweet job could be the motivation for a would be hacker. Of course laws are stricter now too, so prison is also a possible outcome.

For most crackers (NOT hackers!), there is a sense of pride in being able to successfully find and exploit a flaw in a system. But the majority of them will not cause any damage! The knowledge that they could have is enough. Usually the worst they will do is leave behind a note of some sort to show they were there. There are even some that will report the flaw, so that it can be fixed! There are "white hat" crackers.

But there is a spectrum, same as there is in any other part of life. Same as you have bad cops that are corrupt, you have bad or "black hat" crackers that will use exploits to cause damage. This is a very, very small group! Usually there is some deeper, psychological cause that prompts this behaviour. A normal, well-balanced person would not do this.

The same reason there are some people who like to damage your property. It's just a high-tech version of keying your car.

I don't know if it is out of mental issues, boredom, jealousy, hate, or just a need to hurt others. My personal opinion is that most of the viruses are created by the sad little people who are still living in their mom's basement and want to get back at the world for their pathetic little lives.

who knows?

They’re usually outcast with no life and mad at the world, but at the same time. Some of those hackers are the very same people we buy virus protection from.

Best example is Punkbuster for online games. They're the biggest game hacking group and basically blacked mailed the gaming world. Just like the mob. Buy our proctect or we'll hack you. Nothing but cyber bullies

They are bad guys. They are probably quite dangerous or mad. I'm not joking. Most of the people who create the Virus are Computer Hackers.

First they created viruses and then they created virus protectors.

Same theory used by the mob. Create gangs to bash in businesses and then make the businesses buy "insurance" from the mob or get bashed in. Gotta luv American ingenuity, eh?

They should have their hands chopped off so they could not do this again.

It's bad enough to get a virus on your own computer, but what about the computers in a hospital or the ones the air traffic controllers use, or worse!

Hand me that machete.

I believe the anti-virus softwares were created first, and those who created it needed to sell it, so they created the viruses ;)

But you can have other reasons too, I mean terrorist can use it to disturb some networks to do something meanwhile, or something like that.
