The first trophy was made in 1966 and awarded in 1967. It was called the AFL-NFL World Championship Trophy. The Super Bowl then was called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game and played between the Packers and Chiefs.

The trophy was handed out 3 years until the 1970 merger, and renamed the Super Bowl Trophy. It has been called the Vince Lombardi Trophy since Super Bowl 5 in 1971. Before 1967 there were no trophies given to the NFL or AFL champions.

Lamar Hunt (the owner of Kansas City Saints), who died recently doined the phrase "Super Bowl" because it sounded like "Super Ball" which used to be extremely popular ball that bounces which kids at that time loved. Before that Super Bowl was just a championship game. This is called marketing, see now more than 100 million people watch Super Bowl. (Even thise who know nothing about football), isn't that cool.
