to the extent that advertising efect is primarily to create awareness of , inform about, and cause consumers to attempt trials and ake actions to purchase it role is very limited.
Advertising must therefore be employed as one in a mix of a whole range in an integrated marketing communication effort.
for example combining advertising with a sales promotion (with couipons, rebates, sales discounts) is more effective in cuasing consumers to move from merely getting info on the product/service to taking a purchase decision.
Advertising's main roles are herefore to cause a greater audience or perhaps the target audience to be aware of the product/service, get soem information on the quality, availability, features etc. of the product/service, to encourage trials by the public and to create favourable feeling towards the brand .
Other roles are also to help in reinforcing the brands features (equity, promise, strength etc), creating top-or-the-mind awareness of the product, and helping to remind people that it is still 'there'.

I'm afraid your question is a bit broad to offer a great deal of help....However, one example of advertising/marketing used by Coke is their My Coke Rewards program.
By listing code numbers on their products which can be accumulated & redeemed for prizes, they entice folks to drink more of their product & also visit their website which is also a form of marketing. Good Luck!!
