Assuming you already have a cable modem, you would also need a router, and three network cables (one from the cable modem to the router, one from the router to computer A, and one more from the router to computer B). What a router does is that it takes the information from the modem, which is usually meant for a single computer, and handles splitting it up between multiple computers, as well as splitting up any signals you send out to make sure they get to the right place.

If you decide to go the wireless route, you would need a wireless router, two wireless cards that are compatible with both Windows 98 and the wireless router you purchase, and one network cable (from the cable modem to the wireless router).

A wired network is usually -much- cheaper than a wireless network, easier to setup, and generally has a faster connection speed. But if your computers are far apart, and you don't want to do all that wiring, wireless may be your only option.

You will need what is called a router. This one from Linksys will do the job nicely:

Both PCs must have an ethernet card. I've no doubt the new one will but make sure your PC has one as well. You can buy one for about $10.

You may also opt for the wireless models, however, they will require you to have wireless network adapters which are considerably more expensive.

Here is a helpful article on setting up a home network :

The cable out of your laptop is connected at as quickly as out of your modem? Are you plugging the cable into the "internet" port on your modem and not between the switched ports?
