I go with antec cases.
To save a little $$ get the OS as an OEM from a respectable source such as newegg. (I saw it for $123 with SP2)
HDD cables should be round cables to allow for adequate air flow and ease of handling.
Excellent power supply (PSU) bought from PC power and cooling.
Hitachi HDD at least 120GB for C:
At least one backup HDD double the size of your C: so about 250GB for D:
For the HDDs you should choose between PATA or SATA and make sure the speed is at least 7200 rpm and 2mb cache.
DVD-RW drive..Plextor or Sony
Processor- First choose between AMD or Intel
Then after you've chosen your processor you can move on to buying a MOBO.
Make sure to get a MOBO with PCI Express! The old PCI standard is dead end technology and a lot of video cards benefit from PCI Express.
Of course go with a PCI Express video card. Depending on what you plan on doing with this computer you should decide on your own with this one. Respectable companies that I've stuck with are Nvidia or ATI.
I would get advice from others on MOBO selection.
All of this is personal preference and should be checked for yourself.

Oh, I forgot to mention not to go cheap on memory or the power supply unit. If you buy memory then get the single largest stick that works for your MOBO so you can upgrade later.

Excellent memory can be matched to your MOBO and purchased at http://www.crucial.com/

Building a computer is the smart thing to do as you will save yourself quite a bit of money! First go to Dell.com and design your computer using their design tool. There you can virtually put together your tailored box. When your done, print your components and specs. Now go to Newegg, com and order your components with the same or close to the same specs. Be sure to keep everything compatible, it's not hard as they guide you as well. My son and I have done this twice, the most recent computer is the gaming monster that now occupies a third of his bedroom. Newegg seems to have the best prices. Once he had his package selected I tried to shop around to beat their prices and was only able to find two out of the twelve or so components cheaper. The savings (about 10 dollars) wasn't worth ordering elsewhere so I ordered the whole deal from them and it was on our doorstep 3 days later. The only thing I ordered from Dell was their 24 inch monitor which is unbelievable (available w/discount about 700)!

2-Intel Xeon Quad Cores
Go to the Apple store January 10th and order one, use bootcamp or parallels to run windows when you must.
You are going to save money building your own only if you use older parts, watch for sales, or have parts at home. Labor to put a computer together is less than $20.

The best are the parts that are on sale, you can save at least 50% if you watch the weekly ads. Don't be in a hurry to purchase, wait till you find it on sale.
