Emilio Salgari was the most popular writer about exotic adventures: it's the only Italian writer (apart from Carlo Collodi and his Pinocchio) to develop characters who are still now icons in Italian pop culture, like Sandokan and il Corsaro Nero. You can consider him as the Italian Jules Verne, somehow.

Other writers who lived during last century and generally considered Great Ones could be
Alberto Moravia, Cesare Pavese, Primo Levi, Carlo Levi, Natalia Ginzburg, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Gianni Rodari (a modern fabulist), Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco just to name a few.

Andrea Camilleri series about police chief Moltalbano is also a recent cultural phenomenon; Camilleri novels aren't simply crime stories, anyway, but portrait of a society, so Camilleri's should not be considered just entertaining.

Valerio Evangelisti horrorific/fantasy/sci-fi works should also be considered.

Not sure about modern day Italian writers, but Dante Alighieri is probably the greatest classical Italian poet.
