I have been looking for a monologue recently for an audition to the NYT in the UK. Unfortunatly, I have not had much success. I am looking more in the direction of something from Antigone, as herself or Creon, or perhaps something more shakespearean like Malvolio. I generally tend to prefer angry, emotionally high monologues, so nothing too light hearted please! Perhaps you have used a monologue before and through it was great, I'd love to know. Also, if you know of any monologue databases or resource sites that are good, I would be grateful if you could provide them. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have not specifically been asked to perform a "classical" text as such, it's just that I have recently performed Twelfth Night, so I am familiar with that play. Ideally I was looking for something written in the last century, based around modern issues. But I don't really mind if it conforms with the things above. But even if it doesn't conform with the above and you think it is a great monologue, then please tell me! I will be ever so grateful.

I'm not going to recommend anything specific here...I'd need to know a lot more about you and the level of your work before I suggested particular pieces.

However, here's a bit of general advice: if you've been asked to perform a Classical monologue, I would strongly urge you to stay away from Greek Tragedy. Don't get me wrong; these are great plays. BUT...for English-speaking actors, you're always working at arm's length from the playwright's intent, in that you have to depend on the quality of the translation you select. And I can tell you from personal experience, there are a lot of WEAK translations out there.

99 times out of 100, when you have to perform a Classical monologue, "Classical" = "Shakespeare." Your auditors want to know that you can handle HEIGHTENED language, which probalby means VERSE. If and when you're given the opportunity to perform two contrasting Classical pieces, there's nothing wrong with using a Greek piece (or a prose Shakespeare) as your second monologue, but your "A-list" material should be Shakespearean verse.

Having said that...if you peruse ANY of Shakespeare's works, you'll find useful monologues, some of them well off the beaten path.

i'm auditioning for the nationwide youthful human beings theatre in February besides! Im extremely worried approximately it yet i've got faith that in case you do a 'basic' monologue and do it extremely nicely, I mean extra helpful than each and all of the others, then whether they have heard it 1000 cases they are going to remember you and love the kind you acted it out
