I downloaded a copy of windows xp 64 to disk (iso file) and now I'm trying to get my computer to read it, so that I can install it.

By default, windows XP hasn't a clue what ISO files are.

My suggestion, find an ISO converter and make this ISO some physical media! There are A LOT of programs out there that will read ISO images and make them appear as another drive in your computer (Virtual-cdrom), but when it comes to installing an OS, this is NOT a good idea.

The OS usually wants to reboot, and then needs files from the media. If you have a "virtual" media, how then will the install process ever find it, without being in itself. Crazy loop.

Do a search. Most CD/DVD burning programs will convert an ISO to physical media.

Open Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel. You'll find Add or Remove System Components on the left side of the window.

I am not sure about the legality about your iso file..however, you can use daemon tools tools to mount that iso onto a newly created CD drive.
