I have been living abroad for 6 years now. Yes, you do miss your friends and family, however, at the beginning especially, this will be balanced out by the excitement of seeing new places, meeting new people etc.
If you stay away for a long time, you may miss out on a lot of things, and little by little you will grow apart from your closed one.
However, I do definitely reccomend an experience abroad, maybe for 1 year or so. Especially at your age. You can't go wrong. You will meet new people, differnet ways of living and thinking, you will experience freedom. But most of all, you will discover aspects of yourself that you don't know you have! And this you will bring home with you in the end.
Go for it!

HOME. There is no place on earth like home. No matter how life is tough in your country, don't ever think that freedom and the new( maybe the better life) can replace those special people.
I was 17 when I left my country, 19 when I settled down in the new land. It's been 4 years and I am still homesick for my country and my relatives and friends. I can't go back to my country. It seems like the more time I live away from them, the more I miss them
Anyway, it's your life and you get to choose. Good luck to you whither you choose home or freedom.

Home teaches us who we are. It teaches us what we don't want to be. It is the beginning o everything
If you do not risk anything you will not gain anything. You will also not have as many chances to learn new things. SOme will be good, some bad. But without risk the odds are slim tht it can all change.
I lived in my home town for 31 yrs. Recently (in last 2 months) i have moved to larger town to follow my children. It is lonely here. I know almost no one. But it is slowly changing my frame of mind. I look at things from a new perspective. If i hadn't moved i'd still be the same person i have been for 31 yrs... new people new experiences.
Now my kids are going to be moving to Saskatchewan in june. This is over 2000 miles away. I won't be able to hop in the car and pick them up. I will more than likely follow them but in a few years. distance makes the heart grow fonder.
Besides, with the internet there are better odds of keeping in touch with friends and family.

When I left my country, I was scared, very naive, shy and sensitive to the point that I thought I will never make it. I had very bad experience in the first country I went, I should go back then, but me and my blasted ego did not want me to go back, I was afraid then that when I come back they will just tell me that I told you so, the words I hate to hear. So I stayed and move to another country where I live right now. It is scary in the very beginning but moving away from home yo will learn a lot of things and you become a survivor at the end. So if you won't try, you will never know what is your future in other country. Good luck if just in case you choose to travel. Don't worry your families and friends will be fine.

I would recommend travel while you are young, if anything happens at home you can keep in touch via the internet and letters. Even if you only go for a year the experience will be great and you won't feel what if as you get older. Plus, you can always go home if you don't like being away from your family.
Why not see if any of your friends are up for a jaunt around Europe? That way you've got company and back-up. Just don't go for an au pair job as they are crap!

You don't say how old you are - which will have a bearing on my answer. It sounds a bit drastic - why not move to another town then at least you are nearby to visit on family occasions. The sort of freedom you are referring to is more a state of mind than physical location. I suggest you work on your feelings towards your family and possibly get some help with the dynamics and relationships which are making you feel trapped.
I wish you well for 2007 wherever you live and whatever you do.

Do not give in to that mindset that another country is better than your own. Many have left their families and friends to taken off to live in a foreign land but they soon become disillusioned and seriously homesick. Visit the place first and stay for about a month or two before making up your mind, otherwise you mind end up very frustrated and missing your loved ones and all those nice things you've already mentioned.

I have to admit, I'm envious.
To be young, unattached, and free to move around is a GREAT feeling, albiet a little scary, too. You have the ENTIRE world at your finger tips. Yes, you will miss family, friends, events, etc...
However, you will GAIN so much in experiences. You will make NEW friends, events, plans, dreams....ANYTHING!
If you have the chance, take it. Carpe Diem!
I hope you have a Happy New Year! It sounds like 2007 will be a year you will never forget!

If you have the urge to go, do it, you may regret in years to come that you didnt. Off course you'll miss them, but there are phones, letters, txt's, you wont miss out as much as you think. You will get home from time to time. You will make new friends. If you find its not for you, you return home, at least you can say you tried.
