The bag should be sturdy and able to support 3-4 medium weighted books. I did see one but the inside was some sort of heavy plastic and the outside was crocheted.

Felting can be pretty strong. If you find a pattern for a felted bag you could try that. If you have a local yarn store (not like a Michaels or major craft store, but a local yarn store), you could drop by there and ask them if felted or crocheted bags are strong enough to be used like a briefcase. They are usually really experienced.

Good luck!

A felted bag would be perfect! Just make a wide-strapped bag about 1.3 - 1.4 times the size you want it (in crochet) out of a 100% wool yarn and felt it - sew it together, if needed, throw it in a pillowcase pinned shut, and put it with a few pairs of jeans and detergent in a washing machine on "hot" and let the agitation cycle run. It may take several cycles but stop when the stitch definition gets very soft.

Good luck!

Going along with the butcher's twine idea, you could buy nylon cord at your local hardware store and crochet the bag out of that; that would make a bag that's really strong and easy to clean.

Aside from putting a liner in it...hmm. If I was doing this with knitting, I'd use wool yarn and felt it, but I think crochet is a bit stronger. Still, there's that option.

use string instead of yarn. i think its called "kitchen string" the kind that you tie up roasts ect with. it comes in white only but you can dye it any color/colors you want. its very sturdy so that should work ok.
