At first you might think I'm mad - but if you examine the material out there, you'll figure out what I'm talking about.

Teen and adult-themed animation - is a speciality - chiefly in Japan!

What about the English speaking world (Hollywood etc.)?

We have animated comedy (need I mention the Simpsons?).

What about Shrek? Comedy.

And what about Prince of Egypt? For the Sunday School children.

Final Fantasy? Japanese.

Hulk, the movie? Close, but not a fully animated movie.

The Bat Man; Justice League TV series? Very, very nice American cartoons! It's sad, however that they get aimed at only the children's market and are considered 'kiddy'.

Titan A.E.? Now, that's the only one I can think of!

So, can anybody help me figure out if there really is a lack of interest in (English-language) action animation? Thanks.

The problem is that as with all things Japanese they flood the market and have the workforce to mass produce.
For the minority of us we want something more intellectual and thought provoking and these take time. You only have to go into a comic shop and sift through the myriad of magazines on offer especially some of the more "vintage" books and comics. However, in a fast paced throwaway world, the masses want easy to understand junk culture equivalents to fast food.
You have obviously highlighted a niche in the market, but quite a specialist niche.

I asked a question regarding one of Britains
comic and story creators, and no one had heard of the comics!

Well speaking for the United States I'd say yes. There was some exceptions:

I would term Johnny Quest and Adult themed action cartoon despite having a child as the protagonist.

Fish Police was another series nobody watched.

Star Trek The Animated Series had above level writing but crappy animation.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was good adult science fiction/fantasy/ with action thrown in.

Aeon Flux.

Heavy Metal and its sequel.

There is a market out there for adult action, trouble is the "suits" in the studios are scared to doing it.

If your talking about pure combat then I guess your right. But a lot of cartoons have story with a good amount of dialogue. I thought some really good action cartoons are...
Justice League, Superman, Batman, Teen Titans, Fanastic Four, Samuri Jack, Xiaolin Showdown (goofy but fun), Samuri Champloo, Cowboy BeeBop...

I guess I'd call these "adventure" cartoons instead of action

Everytime a good animated adult/mature teen show comes along, the network that airs the show flubs the scheduling and it gets canned! Case in point, Futurama.

yeap....i think there is.......

i think the english-language animations are more focused on hero-type, saving the world, kind of cartoon.... you know, like marvel and dc and those new cartoons out there.....
there are action sequences in some shows, but since mostly based for kids, the storylines are kind of cliche unlike those of in animes.....

another one..... in animes, there are bloodshed going on in action series.... but since it's not good for kids who are underage, the shows they show on national television contains "safe" graphics...

and.....american animation are more on humor sides of things....like (as you have said) the simpsons, family guy, and well, drawn together......

still... english animation has its good sides too....

:D
