well first of all, it wasnt overseas.
the east india company adminstered india in the begining before it became the property of the british empire. all administration was done in the country itself.
they followed the policy of divide and rule. they also had extensively racist policies and controlled the masses by widespread, cruel & violent repression.
they also introduced new technologies and flooded our markets (classic capitalists!)
and so they controlled us for more than 100 years
