Go to Auto Zone and use their loan-a-tool program. You give them a deposit, use the tool and get a FULL refund of your deposit. Even if you broke the tool they have a lifetime warranty so you still get a full refund. Do not use some Mickey Mouse makeshift tool which can be very dangerous. The amount of pressure needed to press out a ball joint is too high to take chances, especially when the right tool is free. If you don't have enough money for the deposit some AZ's will allow you to write a check and give you your check back if you return it before the end of the day. If you need to do this make sure you talk to the manager so they ring you out on a register which will not be "cashed out" before you return.
As far as the article you asked about what you need is a good Chilton's, Haynes or other repair manual. You can check you public library. Most of them carry repair manuals. If they don't and you intend to keep your truck invest in one yourself. They are well worth the money. You can sign-up for an on-line service like alldata.com for a fee which gives you all that the paper manuals give plus extras like TSB's, Recalls, and wiring diagrams. The only downside to these services is the lack of portability unless you have a laptop and wireless so you can have it next to the vehicle when doing the work. You shouldn't need any "special tools". Now, first, you may need a grinder to get it off. If you have big troubles, you can get an old junk 1/2" drive socket and slide it over the ball joint as a shim and put the nut on and run it in with your impact. It should force the joint out. If it comes off easily...great. When putting the new one on, you want to lube things up with some spray and clean the socket with a wire brush. You can use another socket as a sleeve to drive the joint into place. Be very careful when securing the vehicle. Make sure the darned thing won't fall on you. People die every day from these kinds of accidents so please be careful. Get a jack stand under it and also leave the jack under it just as the jack stand takes the load. If the truck rocks off the stand you will have the jack as a backup. Be safe and good luck.

You can do it without a ball joint press if you are VERY creative You'll still need the right combination of pipes or old sockets, and will be hammering your tail off. I'd find somebody with a press set.

You can do it without a press, just loosen the nuts to the top of the threads, turn them over so the castle locks are facing down and whack them with a hammer, they should pop out after a few hits or you might have to apply a little heat. Have lowered and/or installed oversized rims on your ranger (20s,22s,ect). Doing either of those things can cause suspension parts to wear out rather quickly.
