Actually it was very easy because India was never a monolithic society. The Raj numbered in the thousands and each was a prince or king with his own country. Recruit Sikes to put down Hindi and Hindi to put down Pathan and Pathan to put down Kurds. Then you hired the Gurki to scare crap out of everybody. You commanded all the native units with British officers and used either Tommies or other natives as NCOs for each unit. then the NCOs would never plot mutiny with the ranks.
