Actually Roosters and Hens are not chickens. chickens are the babies that are not old enough to tell weather they are a boy or a girl. I agree there is no need to go into detail for a 5 year old. Roosters like to be boss and hens lay eggs. Happy New Year.

Tell your five-year-old that a rooster is a boy chicken and a hen is a girl chicken (and of course, both are chickens).

umm, why? if hes too young to understand the concept, then dont bother.. now, if asked, just say a rooster is aboy, a hen is agirl..
on a serious note, this day in age, every child should be taught about boys and girls,( not about sex just yet) and what private parts are not to be touched... so the kid should know there is a difference between little boys and litle girls, just dont go into anymore detail than he can grasp
