Hey guys, I noticed that my gerbil's ear has been flattened for a day or two when I petted him, I didn't think much of it at first (he usually flattens my ears when I pet him) until I saw him running around his playbox this morning, and it was still flattened. I looked closer and the top of his ear is red and there is some dried blood on the bottom of the outside of his ear, and some yellowish-bloody stuff inside. I am planning to take him to the vet immediately, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and what caused it?
Again, I'm not substituting this for going to the vet, I'm DEFINITELY taking him, but I just kinda would like to know what I might be dealing with. Thanks!!

*I took this down before because I needed to re-edit it*

Gerbils are prone to ear scratches. Do you have him in a cage with another gerbil? They sometimes tussle and this can lead to scratches. Occassionally, if you do not clib their nails, they will scratch themselves.

The danger is that you may not have spotted this right away, and there may be an infection. Make sure to take him to the vet asap.

Also, use nail clipper to remove the pointf (tips ONLY) of his claws periodically from now on. If you can find a smooth flat rock (like a stone that has been rounded in a river) that will lie flat on the bottom of his cage, that may help wear down the nails as well.

Please do away with the gerbil and rap him up in heat gentle bedding. Make him sense comfortable and risk-free. If he's bleeding from the ear isn't a good sign. it might desire to be ( i'm purely guessing ok ) a million. Ruptured ear drum. 2. Stroke 3. Tumors of the ear canal or middle ear. 4. some Cancers can bleed additionally. She has worked respiratory or is calling it complicated to breath then she has grow to be anemic by way of the lack of ability of blood. Her possibilities of survival sound very narrow. Sorry, yet I do wish its not this severe.

Sounds like it could well be an ear infection. Are you able to gently clean the ear with just some cotton wool and warm water? I don't have gerbils but keep pet rats and they've had several ear infections over the years. If it is an infection a course of antibiotics should clear it up.

Good luck at the vet :)

Sounds like an infection due to scratching or getting caught on something on his wheel. If it is blood and yellow that is infection. Antibiotics and tlc will do it
