As has correctly been stated, a 52 weeks and 1 day long year must contain 52 Sundays and may contain 53. Ditto a 366-day long year must contain 52 Sundays and may contain 53. So the answer is minimum 52 and maximum 53.

However the year in which countries changed over from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian Calendar was 10, 11 or 12 or 13 days shorter than the normal year and this made a difference, an exception to the pattern.

Different countries changed over at different times. Pope Gregory's original edict was in 1582 (not a leap year) and shortened it to 355 days therefore.

The last day of the Julian calendar was Thursday 4 October 1582 and this was followed by the first day of the Gregorian calendar, Friday 15 October 1582 (the cycle of weekdays was not affected).

The year therefore ended on Friday 31 December and the ten days shortfall therefore included 2 Sundays. The year only had 50 Sundays as a result.

When England decided to change over in 1752, this was a leap year but to compensate for 1700 being a Julian Leap Year there was an 11-day adjustment to be made. The effect was similar.

Wednesday, 2 September 1752 was followed by Thursday, 14 September 1752 (to account for 29 February 1700 (Julian)) and the year ended on Sunday 31st December and this 355-day year therefore had 51 Sundays in it, as a result. As the 11 lost days only contained one Sunday.

So: Minimum 50 Sundays and maxium 51 Sundays when changing over to the Gregorian calendar,

A year has 365-366 days. This is 52 complete weeks plus either 1 or 2 extra days.

Since there are 52 full weeks in any year, a year must have at least 52 Sundays.

If one of the extra days is a Sunday, there could be 53 Sundays, but certainly not more.

Thus, there are at least 52 and at most 53 Sundays in a year, whether or not it is a leap year.
