to update you all - the police were interested they take it very seriously when people dont stop.
why should i pay for for the damage - all it would have taken was for the bloke to be be accountable for his actions and it could have been sorted out without hassle to anyone

Someone did this to me!!!! No one gave me the details though. I would telephone the police and make an incident report. You will need it in any event to make a claim if the damage is bad enough. You will probably find that they police are really helpful they usually are for this sort of thing.

Hopefully these people will get the message.

I have also knocked into a car in a supermarket car park, did not do much damage and saw the person outside and simply went to a cash machine and got them £50 to get the dint man to get it out. Worked for me in the end they rang me back and got my address to give me £15 back as it only cost them £35!

If your car is damaged and you want it repaired then is suggest you report it and be thankful that other people are prepared to come forward as witnesses.

If your car is not very badly damaged and you can't be bothered with the hassle, then leave it.

Once,my car was damaged by a driver while it was parked outside my house. My neighbour got the reg, and i took it all the way and got my compensation.

It is entirely up to you what you do. I agree the person should have waited to speak to you, but of course they hope to get away with it - which they would do if there had been no witness.

My car was hit in a Tesco's carpark 4 years ago, while I was shopping. I came back to my car to find the person waiting for me to explain what had happened and we exchanged information. To this day I applaud that action and would do the same myself. So I would have no hesitation on acting on information passed to me in reporting the incident to the police. People should take more responsibilty for their actions after all if the boot was on the other foot...

Someone crashed into my car in Tesco's car park and did about £800 of damage. They left a note on the windscreen owning up - guess I was lucky that she was one of the good guys!

Tell the police! This is criminal damage, and the fact that it was in Tesco's not on the road is irrelevant.

The sort of person who would drive off is probably the sort of scum who will refuse to accept responsibility for their actions and may turn nasty. Let the police handle this one.

Something very similar happened to me. I contacted the police, who later told me they had located the owner of the car. Of course, the driver denied having hit my car. I don't know what became of the situation because the police never contacted me again. But I still felt calling the police was the right thing. In most places, the law requires a driver to leave contact information if he hits a parked car.

well I would immediately contact them and say that you have two independent witnesses. But give them the opportunity to explain, they may not be aware that they bumped your car, thjey may have checked for damage and found none. I'd let them explain and see how the conversation goes. You don't have to report this to the police, as no-one was hurt, but you might have damage, even unseen, that needs repairing. So I would contact them first and say that you are getting an inspection, then visit a garage and see if there is any damage underneath, then contact them again. And keep a note of the conversation, dates and times, etc., in case this goes to an insurance claim.
Good luck

Legally the cars are parked on private ground so the police won't touch it. Morally you deserve compensation but the only way is probably through the small claims court.
Contacting the car owner would probably be the simplest course of action to see if they are prepared to cough up, first.

Are you new at driving? Shopping trolleys, or carts, are one of the biggest risks to vehicles. For multiples of reasons. First, most shopping centers can't justify the cost of paying people to keep track of the trolleys, and put them all away properly. Some have people who will check the lots, but not regularly. Secondly, since there is no one to do this on a frequent basis, the responsibility lies in the shoppers themeselves to properly put the carts away. Thus, the ones ultimately guilty for the damage, is a combination of whomever left the cart out, and gravity. Neither of which you will be able to track down and hold responsible. Edit: YOU BACKED INTO THE TROLLEY. I just re-read the question, and there's no doubt: You are at fault. For failure to properly control your vehicle while in motion. The trolley, if it had the ability, should sue you. Meanwhile, the shopping center can sue you for damage to their property.

If I hit a car and damaged it, I would snap pics with my camera phone and call my insurance company and wait. Where I live in the US, generally the police are not called for minor parking lot fender benders.

Never try to negotiate this on your own with the person who damaged your car and left the scene. You know nothing about this person and there behavior so far is not positive. Call the police, take pictures, take down names and numbers and call your insurance company.
