HI
Yes they call an animal shelter and take it in if requested but you have to tell them that you want them so they don't get placed it would be better for a family member to take them or come to their house and feed them.

Usually if there is a family member that wishes to keep the animal. If there is no family then they take it to the humane society and the humane society takes care of the rest, such as getting them a home and taking care of them until they get a new family.
Also, I think if none of the family members want it and someone at the police station wants it then they can keep it. . . .but I am not sure on this.

this actually happened to my father in delaware. i think each state has it's own law on this. the police let my mom take one pet and i took the other. if this has happened to you or someone that you know i wish you the best of luck. call your local police department AND animal shelter. WARNING: some people may give you cruel answers, i've had it happen to me. just skip them, you don't need the stress.

I don't know the answer based upon the limited information provided, but it will depend on whether the animal has evidentiary value. Assuming it does not, the police likely have wide discretion about what to do. So.... be nice if you get arrested. - r

It varies from community to community. Some PD's have their own animal control officers and facilities, others contract out to another individual or animal shelter.
None will just release the animal to anyone.

The animal is placed in the custody of the local SPCA or animal shelter. There they must hold the animal until all the legalities are taken care of. They cannot adopt the animal out until they have full legal custody of said animal.

They will take it to the local shelter or Humane Society. If the arrested people are unable to re-claim it, it will hopefully go up for adoption.
