That seems quite an odd question to me... just as odd as someone asking "Why can't you tell the difference between the appearance of an American and a Canadian?" (apart from their accents), or something just as puzzling.
I can't quite tell you the exact reason why there are so many Chinese people in the Phillippines, although I'm guessing it's either to do with private family issues, a better environment perhaps than their home country, or simply just a new country to live in, that made them move.
However, maybe it has something to do with history too. People of Philippines have been trading economically with China and Japan for centuries, and in these cases, Chinese natives will decide to move to the Philippines and settle there. Also, as well as Mandarin Chinese being one of the major languages spoken there, there is also Japanese, Arabic and even Spanish spoken in the islands. This also gives Chinese another country of choice to live in. It's not really uncommon for different nationalities of Asia to move from one country in Asia to another. You get Taiwanese people moving to China, Chinese people moving to Hong Kong, and even Chinese people moving to India. There are all sorts of reasons to explain why there are so many Chinese people in the Philippines.

The Chinese moved to the Philippines many centuries ago to look for better economic opportunities. A lot of them stayed because of the ease of doing commerce in this country in the past. The Chinese enclaves her include Binondo, Greenhills and Corinthian Gardens. Proof of their numbers is the number of Chinese schools all over (i.e Xavier School, ICA, etc.) the metropolis. Some of the richest Filipinos are actually Chinese or with predominant Chinese ancestry. And, most Filipinos, without their knowing it, have actually Chinese blood running in their veins due to inter-marriages.

You silly buggers,
Filipinos are a mix of so many different races.
These islands were discovered by King Phillip of Spain (hence filipino-little phillips). Before that there were the original inhabitants, which everyone has pushed to the brink of extinction, they're only dragged out to perform their dances for tourists and allowed to sell their handicrafts to the same. Shame on you.
Go to any hardware store run by a chinese filipino and you will find everything you need or they will get it for you in one week.
Next door, you'll find a filipino hardware store and they will be out of stock of everything and don't even understand what you need to order.
The Chinese are a mainstay of the economy in this country, and without them, nothing would happen!
Filipinos are jealous of their success, since Chinese work hard and Filipinos don't ( generalising!).
This is why a lot of Chinese Filipinos are kidnapped.
If everyone in this country worked as hard as them, then there probably wouldn't be so much poverty!

The Chinese was already trading in the Philippines even before Magellan discovered P.I. (and later decapitated by Lapu-lapu). Inter-marriages with Chinese is common but less. Just like the Spaniards who want to keep the bloodline intact within their family and circles. Chinese are not hardworking, they use money to move money (as in business) of course labor is cheap so Filipino's end up with the hardwork. Filipino's are natural rebel, check our history with Spain and US. Chinese also helped us fight the Spaniards until some Filipino's (the Tagalogs) betrayed them. Anyway they are also Filipino's, my chinky brothers and sisters.

Lol. It has to do with our country's history. I'm not good in history though so can't defend you that. But I guess another factor is the cheap labor here which is a good advantage for their business.
