"Taxi" is an abbrievated from of "taximeter", actually the device used to measure the distance the vehicle has travelled and thus how much you must pay.

"Taxicab" is actually a combined form, from taximeter and "cabriolet" -- little goat. At one time goat carts were used for persnoal transport for hire in some cities.
