You have so many choices. It would help to know what zone you are in.
I would suggest googling Dave's Garden, its a great site and has an extensive plant file you can review.
Perennials (the ones that come back every year),
Echinacea purpurea and assorted hybrids (coming out in all sorts of fantastic colors)
Sedum is good for variety of color and harsh conditions
Flax, coreopsis, Zauschneria, Verbena
You could seed Larkspur and Zinnia's for lots of color.
Make use of colorful annuals in pots situated around your pool.
A good book is THE UNDAUNTED GARDEN (available at the library. Lauren talks about Hell Strips (difficult places to plant).
You could try flowering shrubs, and varigated species for variety around that green. Also consider playing with mulch, texture and fragrance.

My neighbour planted morning glory and it is climbing nicely on the pool fence, the huge flowers are beautiful and last long. Happy New Year to you and yours.

You can try a few Lantana - they come in many different colors and are very hardy. Also Bird of Paradise is very pretty - bright orange colored and bushy if trimmed right. Bougainvillea is also very bright and colorful.
